Recovering Purified Chromic Acid — Saving Time, Money, and Materials

In decorative chrome plating, only about 5% of chromic acid purchased actually gets plated; the balance is lost to rinses and fume scrubbers. With the cost of chromic acid and its related waste treatment expenses, it’s no wonder that recovery is so popular.

However, simple recovery schemes often lead to poor rinsing and plating problems. When proper techniques are used, quality can actually improve while you save money.

How it Works
A great deal of high purity, deionized water is sent to the counter-flow rinses to ensure excellent rinsing. Rinses (and scrubber water) are processed through cation and anion exchange columns that first purify and then concentrate the chromic acid. After this step, a small volume from the first rinse is pumped through the cation exchanger. This stream contains 70-80% of the chromic acid carried out of the plating tank.
Caustic soda is used to recover the chromic acid from the anion exchanger, and sulfuric acid is used to regenerate the cation exchanger. Any residual sulfates in the chromic acid are removed in a sulfate adjustment system. If there is not enough natural evaporation from the plating tank, a small evaporator can be used to further concentrate the chromic acid.
